The Salem High girls opened the new year with a loss to Carroll County on Tuesday. The Spartans dropped a 66-35 decision in Salem.

The visiting Cavaliers jumped in front early, scoring 28 points in the first quarter to take a 28-9 lead. Carroll was up 51-18 by the half before the Cavs took their foot off the gas, scoring eight points in the third quarter and just seven in the fourth.

Amanda Woody led Salem with 11 points, hitting three of five from behind the three-point arc. Freshman Katie Evans had 10 points and Kendra Bolen had five points and led the Spartans with five rebounds.

The loss dropped the Spartans to 0-7 on the season. Coach Corbitt Hairston brought four girls up from the jayvee team and added five girls to the jayvees after the Andrew Lewis Middle School season ended. Those eighth grade girls saw extensive minutes in the jayvee game Tuesday, a close loss.

The Spartans are at Blacksburg tonight, followed by a home game against Cave Spring on Tuesday.
