This is quite an honor for these two Salem teams. In the past the Salem teams competed amongst Salem and Glenvar teams to reach the final, where they would play the Bedford champ. However, this year the tournament included teams from Salem, Roanoke County, Botetourt County and Franklin County, making it a lot tougher to reach the final round.
The Salem PeeWee team, coached by Nathan Overstreet, defeated Vinton in the semifinals last Saturday at Bogle Stadium. The PeeWees didn’t record scores during the season, but the Spartans are 3-0 in the post-season and have had no close games. They’ll play Hidden Valley Sunday for the eight-and-under championship.
The Salem Spartan Junior team, for 12 and under players, remained undefeated with a lop-sided win over the Cave Spring Knights at Bogle Saturday. The top-seeded Spartans, coached by Mike Jones, will take on the second seed from Franklin County this Sunday.
In the Little Division, for 10 and under players, the Glenvar Bulldogs reached the semifinal round but lost to top-seeded Cave Spring in the semifinals at Bogle Saturday. The Bulldogs are coached by Stacy Hutchison.
Cave Spring advances to the Little Division championship game on Sunday at 3 pm against third seeded Franklin County. Cave Spring is coached by former Salem High quarterback Tooey Ondrus.
