The Craig County High School football team had some good news and some bad news in the past weeks as the boys prepare for what promises to be an improved season.

First the bad news. Assistant coach Jerry Caldwell passed away last week after suffering a heart attack. Caldwell, who came to New Castle with head coach Mark Harrison last summer, had been having health problems in recent months. Caldwell was also a long-time high school basketball official in the area.

“He was a great guy and a real good coach,” said Harrison. “We’re really going to miss him.”

The Rockets have been lifting weights to bulk up for the season and participation has been good. “Rocket Barbell” has been underway for six weeks and five players qualified for the Dave Williams Award; Dustin Hurley, Layton Huffman, Ben Deplazes, Justin Hurley, and Camron Fisher. Players who have qualified to win the Ethan Reeve Award include Jacob Wolfe, Zach Peters, Sam Saunders and Will Johnson. The awards will be presented at the end of the season.

“Players will have two more opportunities to qualify for the award, at the middle of May and the end of July,” said Harrison.

Coach Harrison will conduct a recreation league football camp on Saturday, June 2, from 10 am to noon. More on that will be announced as the date approaches.
